Over the years since this project began, majority of the stories that have been shared are women. This book highlights the stories of Somali women and about the importance of Somali women's roles within their community from a local, national and international context. Women in the Somali region make up over 50% of the population, yet we rarely hear about them. I wanted to understand how it was possible to ignore that many people. Growing up, like many Somali families I saw the women in my family take on a lot of the responsibilities, in short, they were the glue that held the household together. I saw their strength and what they were capable of, but In ever saw that go past their roles within the home and I didn't understand why. From a young age I found myself questioning this and as I got older, I realised that this wasn't a problem limited to my own family. It was very much evident in the roots of my nation. It was apparent in the number of female teachers we had in the region, it was very evident in the number of female doctors we had in Somali region, it was much more evident in the number of female representatives we had in the Somali government and it was pretty damn evident in the number of female run businesses. There was a clear lack of women's involvement in national affairs, and I concluded that this was why we seemed to be stuck at a standstill. Our culture prides itself on the importance it places on our women, yet it saddens me to notice its apparent failure to acknowledge their necessary contribution in other areas. We have failed to come to the realisation that in order for the region to restore itself to a functioning state, we need to involve our women in all areas. By excluding half the population, ultimately, we're doing more harm than good. We were in a civil war for over 21 years and we've yet to figure out that women are the missing link to Somalia's peace and stability. 続きを読む
