【著者紹介】

ヘレナ・ターヴィーはロンドンのホーンジー・カレッジ・オブ・アートでファッションとテキスタイルデザインを学び、ファッションデザイナー兼パターンカッターとして活躍。その後、デザイン、パターンカット、各種手芸を教えた経験も持ちます。著書に『トーマスのクロスステッチ』（ハムリン社、1995年）があり、現在は夫と息子とともにコーンウォールに在住。

A section in the book is devoted to materials and techniques together with advice on equipment and suppliers.

This beautiful book spills over with more than 50 original designs from Helena Turvey suitable for the new and experienced cross stitcher alike.

Each one of the five chapters pictures, clothing, gifts, soft furnishings and items for children- reflects the diversity of the animal world, from lemurs and leopards to seahorses and swans. Projects feature familiar animals, such as a magpie jewellery case, and some more exotic creatures, such as an antelope door stop. They also range from the practical to the purely decorative. A comprehensive section devoted to materials and techniques offers useful advice on equipment, stitching and suppliers, and each project has clear detailed instructions, easy to read colour charts and thread keys.

Small and simple designs feature alongside more complicated and advanced projects. In the clothing chapter there are ideas for adding style to ready-made items, including stitching bees to brighten up a sunhat and an eye-catching hummingbird to decorate a blouse collar. The gifts chapter explains how to make enchanting and unique presents resents for all sorts of occasions, from an animal advent calendar to a love birds Valentine heart. The soft furnishings chapter shows you how to add colour and style by dressing up curtains with leopard tie-backs and decorating a lampshade with a cross stitched giraffe. An array of cards, pictures and frames inspired by the natural world in the first chapter and a bear puppet, a camel trinket box and a turtle bookmark in the chapter of items for children combine to make this book an exciting and versatile collection for all cross stitchers.

HELENA TURVEY studied fashion and textile design at Hornsey College of Art in London. She worked as a fashion designer and pattern cutter and went on to teach design, pattern cutting and mixed needlecrafts for several years. She is the author of Thomas the Tank Engine Cross Stitch (Hamlyn, 1995). She lives in Cornwall with her husband and son.
